Leveling System
The state of Virginia has created a standard leveling system
for reading. At the end of each school year, it is expected that each student
will be at a level equal or greater to the DRA (Developmental Reading
Assessment) level of his/her grade.
According to the Virginia DRA level matrix, at the end of each school year,
students need to reach the following levels:
-
First grade students should be reading at a DRA level 16
-
Second grade students should be reading at a DRA level 28
-
Third grade students should be reading at a DRA level 38
-
Fourth grade students should be reading at a DRA level 40
-
Fifth grade students should be reading at a Guided Reading Level "U"
-
Sixth grade students should be reading at a Guided Reading Level "Y"
-
Seventh and Eights grade students should be reading at a Guided Reading Level "Z"
The Leveling system of books are an integral part of guided reading. Leveled
books are written and verified in accordance with standardized criteria
associated with each level. Books within the leveling system get increasingly
difficult with each level, and are especially designed to diversify the reading
and comprehension skills of the reader.
