About Magic of Reading
Magic of Reading is a home –based reading tutoring service
located in Northern Virginia, servicing Fairfax County and Prince William
County. The service is provided by a Masters trained Reading Specialist, and
focuses primarily on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, spelling
instruction, phonics review, writing techniques, test-taking, and fluency. The
service is provided by a Masters trained Reading Specialist, and is targeted
primarily for kids. For an affordable cost, you can help your child acquire the
tools and strategies that will help him/her become a successful lifelong
reader.

Tutoring Objective
During the tutoring sessions, balanced approaches to
literacy learning are used, including shared reading as well
as independent reading and writing. Children who read with me learn
to appreciate and love reading as engaging lessons are created, which develop
new skills that are cultivated based on their prior knowledge.
Mission
Through the tutoring session, we strive to achieve
the following:

To gain an understanding of the students' cultural and interllectual background
(schema) to build and develop lessons in the balanced literacy framework.

To have my students move up 1-2 levels in reading for every 3-5 tutoring
sessions.

To help the students enjoy reading, and to foster lifelong reading habits.

To have students become better spellers and writers by utilizing the balanced
writing framework.
Lessons Format:
-
Re-reading of two to three "familiar" books as well as the previous lesson's
"new" book

Using magnetic letters and a dry erase board, the student performs word work
activity invoking his/her phonological/phonics skills

Shared writing of a topic the child chooses using sound boxes and analogy to
write new words

Reassembling cut up sentence from sentence strip, utilizing the Language
Experience Approach (LEA)

Introducing and reading a new book
Qualifications

Certified teacher through the state of Virginia for grades k-8

Master's Degree in Reading as a Reading Specialist

Trained Reading recovery Teacher, an early intervention reading program

Over four years of teaching experience
