Teaching Approach
During the tutoring session, I use the components of balanced
literacy including:
-
Familiar Reading
-
Re-reading
-
Running records and miscue analysis for daily assessment
-
Comprehension skill work as an integral aspect of decoding text
-
Daily phonological awareness/phonics skill work
-
Writing in response to reading or personal interests
-
Writing by analogy
-
Writing new words by hearing the parts of words using sound boxes
-
Reading new text by applying new skills and strategies
Lessons are typically structured in the following
general format:
-
Re-reading of two to three "familiar" books as well as the previous lesson's
"new" book
-
Using magnetic letters and a dry erase board, the student performs word work
activity invoking his/her phonological/phonics skills
-
Shared writing of a topic the child chooses using sound boxes and analogy to
write new words
-
Reassembling cut up sentence from sentence strip, utilizing the Language
Experience Approach (LEA)
-
Introducing and reading a new book

First Session:
In the first session with the student, Iwill begin working with the
student by assessing his/her skills and abilities through a thorough and
complete set of seven assessment measures. This session typically lasts 45
minutes, and it enables me to learn about the student's current reading
level, as well as plan future lessons to meet the student's existing abilities.
Subsequent Sessions:
Each lesson is planned based on the student's reading level and abilities, and
introduces challenging elements to help the child acquire new skills as well as
perfect existing ones. To encourage the student's active involvement in the
lesson, the books chosen for the session are based on the student's interests.
Daily Communication with Parents
Parents are informed of the student's progress through daily
communication. At the end of each lesson, the parent is given a summary sheet
of the student's lesson activities and their reading percentage for the level
of book(s) he/she read.
The student is expected to progress one level per week, if he/she attends 3-5
tutoring sessions per week. Some students will progress faster than others.
Nevertheless, from my experience, every student makes progress!
